The new UHC 'Ethical Design Newsletter' - just in time!

I am currently undertaking a lot of research into ethical and sustainable design issues which the graphic designer battles such as paper and print choices etc. UHC have this week, changed their e-newsletter into one entirely orientated around informing people about these issues and anything else which seems appropriate.

With the first e-mail they have released a series of free postcard prints which anyone can sign up to recieve illustrating the issue that what appears to be green, might not always be eco friendly. A great concept, can't wait to hear the letterbox.

"Buying good, environmentally sound design. Why is it a mine field, when what you need is a stroll in the park?

The fickle world of visual communication never stands still, at least not long enough to catch your breath. Then along comes a recession and suddenly you're battling falling budgets without lowering expectations and standards, or damaging the environment. At UHC we can't fix everything, but we can share our expertise on everything ethical and sustainable in visual communication. A bit of friendly advice for free, as you try to make good choices in a difficult climate (pun intended).

Welcome to the new ethical design bulletin from Ultimate Holding Company...

This is Not Green
It can be hard to tell the difference between an ethical print product and one that is not. In fact, it's virtually impossible to distinguish the environmental credentials of a piece of print at face value. There are the obvious traits of some recycled papers, the tell tail flecking and a more porous surface for starters. However, this still doesn't necessarily mean that it is 100% post consumer waste, and what about the rest of the printing process, the ink used and distance travelled?

To help highlight some of the considerations that we take as designers we've made a limited run of postcards, using many of the techniques and certifications that we recommend, including soya based inks, chlorine free 100% post consumer waste paper and an efficient format. Free copies are available, just send us an email with "green postcard" in the subject and your postal address in the body copy - we'll wing one over to you pronto!"
